Breaks In Stockholm – Stockholm Hotels
Stockholm is
the capital of cool, and I’m not just referring to the weather. A quick glance
through any fashion website and you’ll agree that its inhabitants are some of
the best dressed people on the planet. Take a trip to the Swedish capital, and
you’ll discover that the city is just as good-looking as its citizens. Stockholm
has a vibrant cultural scene, and its bars and pubs have produced many famous
bands. Go for a fika with some friends, or simply stroll along the pristine
streets and take in some of the freshest air in Europe.
Eat
Fem Sma Hus – The name of this
restaurant means ‘Five Little Houses’, a reference to its location under five
houses in the Gamla Stan (Old Town). Fem Sma Hus can sit over 200 guests, yet it
manages to retain a charming, homely atmosphere due to the nine connected
cellars that serve as the dining rooms. The menu offers up classic Swedish
dishes – gravid lax (marinated salmon), herrings, fish roe, and some game
meats. A more unusual dish may be the marinated elk with cranberries, served
carpaccio-style.
See
Skansen Open-Air Museum – Take a step
back in time and see the Sweden of yore at this huge open-air museum. Buildings
from all over the country have been transported and rebuilt here, and actors
dressed up in period costume roam around the place. You’ll be able to see
traditional Swedish crafts, and even get to sample some tasty Swedish dishes
from the restaurants on-site.
Stay
Hotel Skeppsholmen – Sweden may be
the land of Ikea, but you won’t find any of that flat-pack furniture in this
elegant hotel. The minimalist, yet luxurious interiors is a stunning contrast
to the beautifully preserved 17th century building that houses this
hotel. Ask for a sea-view room – you’ll be rewarded with uninterrupted views to
Gamla Stan. It’s only a ten minute walk to Stockholm’s charming Old Town, but
the peace and quiet around the hotel makes it feel like you’ve escaped to the
countryside. Room rates start at around £110.
